Hear It | American Royalty
Get to know the guys from LA’s latest it-band American Royalty.
If you live in LA and you’re in the know, there’s a good chance you’ve already caught American Royalty during their July residency at The Echo. If you’re just learning about them now, no need to worry, there’s one last show in this series (tonight!) and this one’s with Jesse Woods, The Franks and The Miracals with Hit City USA on the decks.
Check out their latest video and see what they had to say when we sat down with them earlier this month:
JC: How did you guys meet?
AR: We met in LA through some mutual friends. We ended up living together in a big ol’ house in the outskirts of downtown with a bunch of close friends who were all musicians…that’s where the band really took off cause we could pretty much make noise 24/7.
JC: Awesome. So, how would you describe this “noise”? What’s your sound and style all about?
AR: Lots of genres—from blues and psych to house and techno—somehow woven together into a musical whole.
JC: When and where was your first show?
AR: The first show we ever played was with Miami Horror and the Superhumanoids at The Central in Santa Monica. They closed the greenroom forever after that.
JC: Very rock n’ roll of you. The Central is one of our favorite venues in Santa Monica and we are huge fans of Miami Horror and Superhumanoids—that show must have been epic. Tell us about the making of your latest video. How did you come up with the concept?
AR: We gave full artistic license to Jeff Scher. He’s a genius and we adore everything he does. We are beyond flattered to be working with him.
JC: So where is your favorite place to hang out in Los Angeles?
AR: We used to love M Bar when it was the dingy, smoke-clouded 80′s speakeasy with velvet furniture and DJs who were only allowed to play music at whispering levels, but it is no longer. Also, Rhonda is always a blast. She’s quirky and fun, that one.
JC: Ah, yes R.I.P. M Bar, long live Rhonda! Both are great nightlife spots…but where are you guys while the sun is out?
AR: By day, we spend a lot of time in Venice. Been trying to jump in the ocean at least once a day.
JC: Sounds like you have this LA thing down!
