Up Close | A Moment with Carlyne

One of our absolutely favorite fashion icons dishes on street culture, style evolution and the Juicy Couture track suit

Juicy Couture: What does style mean to you, and what elements of fashion are you most passionate about today?

Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele: I’m always for the woman- for beauty, for glamour. I love how real women dress. I love when a woman is sexy, looking the best she can look. You know what I like? I adore nonchalance. Simplicity, nonchalance, it’s the most chic thing in the world.

JC: What makes for truly great personal style?

CCD: It’s coming from inside. I never follow the trends- I trust my instincts!  And you know, when I work with other girls [on set], I adore, I love, when they want to keep the clothes. That’s the best compliment in life, because they really want to wear it.

JC: How has street culture influenced your work, aesthetic and style?

CCD: I have get inspiration everywhere. By people walking on the street, by food, by the market, everywhere I go, everything inspires me. I love what I’m doing, I have the passion. I always have the passion.  I go everywhere I’m in the street all the time, I look at everything. I hate to be closed in the office, this is not me. Me, I need to be outside. I watch, I see, I watch every, every, everything. I’m always open.

JC: Having introduced high-low fashion with the very first cover of American Vogue under Anna Wintour’s editorship, your most celebrated work continues to highlight the mix of street + high fashion, how has this evolved over the years?

CCD: Yep!  I was the first one to wear my Chanel jacket with my jeans. All of the designers appreciate all of this.  Now it’s much more common & even trendy to do this. If you put a Chanel suit, ok…but if you put your Chanel jacket with jeans, you look absolutely divine.

JC: What makes the tracksuit such an iconic fashion and street style staple? How do you style your track?

CCD: I love tracksuits because they’re something real. I have some that I take and I put my initial big like this on it- CCD. I mix all my gold and my diamonds with my tracksuit sometimes. I just know: I wake up in the morning; I’m never the same as the day after.
